{Wedding Wednesday} Dionne & Gary’s Essex Wedding with a hint of Cockney!

Happy, hump day! Well, we’re halfway through the week & the sun is shining here in Essex! We hope it’s a lovely day where you are & you’re ready for today’s beautiful real wedding! Captured by the lovely Bloomwood Photography, Dionne & Gary’s Essex countryside wedding has a hint of the Pearly King & Queen about it today!

Over to bride, Dionne, to tell us all about it!

Gary proposed at home, on one knee, just before we left for our holiday. I knew he may have been thinking about doing it at some point that year but it was still a surprise! The wedding planning didn’t get going for four years as I sadly lost my mum and went off all things wedding. But we started it all again after our daughter was born.

We got married at Lord’s Golf & Country Club with our reception at Battlesbridge marquee in Essex.

Our wedding was supposed to be small but we ended up with 65 guests. We had a tight budget so most of the things was done either by ourselves or with help from friends.

We managed to source our suppliers either through recommendations or searching the internet and eBay.

We met Emma from Bloomwood Photography while having photos taken of our daughter. We immediately felt comfortable and eventually even the groom warmed up to having the photos taken! The engaged shoot helped us prepare for what to expect on the day & we’d definitely recommend Emma to others.

I found my wedding dress from just one visit to a bridal shop! It was the 3rd or 4th dress I tried on and knew it was the one straight away. It was a flattering shape and the colour was perfect. The shoes had to be comfortable but would also give me some height!

I helped Gary choose his suit as he always goes for black but I knew grey would go better with our colour scheme! 

Making our wedding personal was the most important thing to us. We wanted every detail of our wedding to be the things we love. My husband is a cockney and was very close to his granddad. Therefore, we had lots of memories of him and his granddad walking in London markets, eating cockles, winkles & stopping for pie & mash with liquor. So, this HAD to be our food theme. Also, his granddad used to fix the London buses so we had one of those to transport the guests.

For favours, we decided to donate to Cancer Research with pin badges for every guest. This is a charity very close to our hearts.

There are lots of great memories! The best parts of the day for us was the best man’s video speech, the sun coming out for group photos, the food & the songs we chose for our first dance & walking out as husband and wife. We chose Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls.

For our honeymoon, we went to Tunisia as a family, with our two month old daughter.

My advice to brides would be don’t worry about planning too soon. Things might go wrong on the day but it doesn’t matter. You will still look back and remember what an amazing day it was.

We completely agree with what Dionne says! Enjoy every minute as it goes by in a flash! Huge congratulations to such a lovely couple!

{Themed Tuesday} Dotty Over Polka-Dots…

Hello you lovely people!

I hope you are all well and are continuing to make wonderful wedding plans.  This past weekend was more than crazy busy. As a result, you may have noticed that Monday Muse didn’t make an appearance.  However, there was more than one reason for that. We have created, Themed Tuesday – every now and then, we want to share a sort of mood board, if you like, of different theme ideas for your wedding. Adoring Pinterest, I am frequently looking up different themes, so thought let’s get creative over here at AVWG and get theming.

Themed Tuesday, is all about the polka-dot. I love this pattern, I always have. You can incorporate this into pretty much every aspect of your wedding – even your dress! So without further ado, take a peek at our ‘mad about polka-dots’ collection…

{Wedding Wednesday} Sticks of Rock, Cocktail Umbrellas & Bright Beautiful Colours; Sarah & Hal

Wedding Wednesday is finally here!

Today, let us introduce to our newlyweds of the week, Sarah and Haland.  This is the romantic tale begins in Egypt, when Haland spontaneously proposed to Sarah under the stars in Egypt in May this year, after 8 years together.  Their wedding took place on the 5th October at Ye Olde Plough House in Bulphan and was photographed (and submitted) by Anesta Broad.

So without further ado, let me hand you over to our beautiful bride, Sarah…

When did you start to plan your wedding, was your husband involved in the planning or did you both instinctively know what type of wedding you wanted?

We decided the next day that we would probably get married in April 2014.  However we ended up looking on the internet and my mum was also looking at venues when she stumbled across a wedding package for October 2013 (this was in just under 5 months’ time) at the Ye Olde Plough House in Bulphan.  The package was being released on the internet the next day, but having already been to the venue two years before we knew that we liked the venue. As we didn’t want to miss out on the deal, my mum provisionally booked it.  It was important to us to get a venue that would cater for the amount of sit down guests that we wanted. The day after returning from holiday, we went to look at the venue and booked it for 5 October.  I had exams in June and needed to study for these so I could not concentrate fully on wedding planning.  By the time my exams were over this left us with four months to organise the wedding.

 

Tell us a bit more about your day; was it a big or intimate wedding?

We invited approximately 80 close family and friends to celebrate the day with us with an additional 50 joining us in the evening.

 

Where did you source your suppliers?

We visited a few wedding shows where we found our photographer Anesta Broad.  I used friends’ contacts to find our cake maker Out of the box.  Our florist and venue dresser was Pots of Petals, who my sister had also used for her own wedding. She went out of her way to make sure we were happy with everything and we knew that we did not have to worry about the venue setup. I also used a couple of wedding planning apps on my phone. 

 

Tell us about your photographer, did you feel comfortable with them, what type of service did you get, would you recommend them?

The photographer was also a really important part of the wedding as this is the thing that you use to remember your special day by.  I was pretty picky with the wedding photographer that I picked.  I looked at Anesta’s website and photos that she had previously taken.  I really liked her when I met her and I liked the style of her photos that she had previously taken. I am very pleased with the photos.   Anesta was a big help with doing a schedule for the day and helping me keep calm throughout the day and making everyone feel relaxed, she really seemed to focus on the detailed shots as well as fun shots and she made sure that every shot on my list was done.

 

How did you know that your wedding dress was ‘the one’? What about the shoes and accessories?

I brought my wedding dress the day after we got back from Egypt from the first shop we visited House Of Couture in Hornchurch Essex.

The dress I bought was the third dress I tried on and I loved it.  I have heard a lot of brides saying that they had a dream dress in mind and that when they tried it on they did not like it and ended up going for a dress completely different.  I always wanted a princess dress, however with this in mind I thought I would go for a tight fitting dress with a fish tail.  So I went into the shop completely open minded.

 I was asked what style of dress I wanted so I asked to try on each style of dress on.  I started with the tight fitted dress with the fish tail on and liked it and then went slightly bigger with the next dress and liked that one too…with these two dresses I could see myself wearing these on my wedding day until I tried on the third dress, the biggest of them all, then I knew this was definitely the dress for me.  It was my dream princess dress with lots of detail and sparkle. I looked in the mirror and I had the biggest smile on my face and my mum and sister who were with me loved it too, we all knew it was the one.  

I had to choose flat wedding shoes due to the length of the dress, which I wasn’t happy about at first, but in the end it was necessary. I bought three pairs of shoes in the end.  One pair to wear for the ceremony, another pair of flip flop sandals to wear if my feet started to hurt, and a pair of white wellies, in case it rained.  I got a headpiece to wear instead of a tiara as I felt it suited me better and fitted well with the dress and how I was having my hair.  The jewellery was also picked due to the sparkle and how it would sit against the sweetheart neckline of my dress.  The veil was borrowed from my sister as it matched the dress perfectly and became my something borrowed.

While on holiday I was thinking about the holiday theme and we came up with a lot of ideas that would involve some DIY.  For the name places I came up with the idea of decorating cocktail umbrellas and putting name labels on them made from ribbon.  I stuck individual diamantes on each of the umbrella arms which took a lot of time and my mum sorted out the ribbon to put on them with the names on.  My mum and I spent a couple of evenings doing this.  My mum and dad also helped to make the table names too.  The table names that we chose were the names of hotels we had stayed in together, along with a picture of us taken on that holiday, and the country the hotel was in.

What favours did you give to your guests, if any?

The wedding favours were also a DIY project.  The favour organza bags were ordered online as were the rocks, to fit in with the wedding theme.  We then put the rocks in the bags to make the favours.

 

What was your most memorable part of the day?

My favourite part of the day was Haland’s speech, it was absolutely beautiful.  I enjoyed the whole day and it was lovely to see that everyone was enjoying the wedding that we had planned especially knowing that the day had gone to plan. I would like to say a massive thanks to my mum and dad as I could not have done it without them.

What song did you have as your first dance?

We had Hey there Delilah by Plain White T’s.  This is a song that means a lot to myself and Haland.  I also had a first dance with my dad, and we danced to I loved her first by Heartland and we chose this song because of the words, it is such a beautiful song and fitted my family well.  

 Where did you go on Honeymoon?

For our honeymoon,we returned to Egypt where Haland proposed.

{Monday Muse} Baby, you’re a firework!

I’m loving cosy nights in at the moment, and watching the local firework display from the comfort of my lounge might make me sound like an old lady, but it’s one of life’s simple pleasures! As a child, we used to have fireworks in the back garden with sparklers a plenty too. Nowadays, it seems to cost a small fortune to have your own firework party but with a husband who’s obsessed with them, that’s exactly what we’ll be doing next weekend in the freezing cold, huddled around the bonfire!

Of course, fireworks at the wedding was something we reeeaallly wanted but, alas, apparently when you get married in the middle of the summer on a farm, fireworks are the last thing you’re allowed! Gah! So, we couldn’t have them at our wedding but I have seen some gorgeous pictures recently of couples who have managed to really end their wedding with a bang and light up the sky! I’m not sure if this is a photographer’s dream or nightmare but we love these images some amazing photographers have shared with us for today’s post! And don’t miss the gorgeous wedding film at the end including a firework finale!

{Freaky Friday} The Taxidermy Lovestory

So, who’s holding or attending a Halloween party this weekend? I’ve already seen some truly amazing outfits from people! I love Halloween & Bonfire Night and really anything a little dark or obscure! So it’s no surprise that today’s shoot was a collaboration between myself and the equally weird yet wonderful Claire Spake Design (sorry, Claire, you’re not weird, honest!)

We decided to create a bridal shoot which was completely out of the ordinary – something which included lots of dark elements, great taxidermy and great style! We just had to use the unique headpieces from Death & Glory Taxidermy, as well as blood shot favours from French Made! Our model (and florist’s) make up was by the ever talented Love Moi Make up & hair by Lynette Chasmer! Fearless Florals created the fab bouquets and papercut anatomical stationery by Claire Spake Design. Be sure to check out their websites too to see their great work!

Photographer Kerrie Mitchell captured the mood of this shoot perfectly, with its horror movie tones, and Claire Spake’s post-production work on creating the silent movie slates is just genius! This is created as a slideshow, to run as a silent movie, so be sure to watch it all!

{Wedding Wednesday} Wellies, Games, Great Wedding Bake Off’s & Bright Colours: Gethin & Jo

It’s Wedding Wednesday!

So, that can only mean one thing; an inspirational real wedding for you.  Now, this one is particularly inspiring, as it includes a variety of fun outdoor games and competitions – all reflecting Gethin & Jo’s love for triathlons and athletics.  Fun is the name of the game with this wedding, the photographs evoke that perfectly, too.  Gethin & Jo’s wedding was sent to us by Rob Leon, a fabulous photographer over here in the Cotswolds.  Their fun-filled wedding took place on Saturday 8th June in Clanfield, Oxfordshire at St Stephens Church, with their wedding reception at Friars Court.

Gethin and I had been together for exactly 12 years when Gethin proposed (he proposed on our 12 year anniversary).  We met in our first year of university.  I’d basically given up hope of Gethin ever proposing! Gethin proposed and got down on one knee in our hotel room just as we were about to go out for a meal at a Michelin star restaurant for our anniversary.  I said yes straightaway!

We started to plan the wedding pretty much as soon as we got engaged.  We worked together through-out – it was very much a team effort.  Our ideas for the day evolved as the months passed by, but we knew from the very outset that we wanted something fun.  I don’t think we would have predicted, at the start, quite how personal it would be and quite how much we would create ourselves.

We had just over 90 guests and no extra evening guests.  Our aim for the day was to have something really fun that all our guests enjoyed. We had a lot of big elements to the day, including ‘The Wedding Games’ in which our guests competed as teams to accumulate points towards our Wedding Finale relay race which decided our ‘Wedding Game Champions’.  We decided immediately that we wanted to play games on the day.  I am a competitive athlete and Gethin a competitive triathlete and are known for playing games and being competitive!

We also had the Great Wedding Bake-off in which we invited guests to bake and bring along cakes to be judged by the mums in three different categories – Presentation, Originality and Taste & Texture.

Friars Court was the perfect venue for us because it provided a blank canvas.  We could do whatever we liked (within reason) in terms of suppliers, decoration, activities.  This enabled us to create a really personal day exactly as we wanted it.

Some of our suppliers were based upon recommendations from Friars Court, otherwise we mostly found suppliers via wedding fairs or the internet.  We created pretty much everything ourselves so a lot of what we sourced was raw materials.

Our photographer Rob Leon was brilliant.  We felt really comfortable with him and he gave us an amazing set of photos that really captured the day.  Our issue has been picking the best photos to print out – there are too many! Rob very much blended into the background capturing some really great natural shots during the day, he also captured our wedding details really well. We would absolutely recommend Rob and have done so already to a few friends.

I had no idea what sort of wedding dress I wanted or what style would suit me.  I found my Chanticleer dress early on and knew it was the one, but it was over the budget we’d set so I spent three more months trying on over 30 more dresses, including trying on my dress a few more times! I knew I didn’t want conventional wedding shoes and were really pleased to find Irregular Choice. Because of the style of my dress, I didn’t need a necklace and don’t generally wear much jewellery.  My only accessories in addition to my shoes were some real flowers in my hair.

Gethin had his suit made by ‘A Suit That Fits’.  It felt wrong to us for only me to be getting a special outfit, so Gethin got one too!  I went along to the first meeting when Gethin was getting measured, choosing his suit style and colour, but Gethin knew exactly what he wanted and I didn’t provide too much input.  Gethin went to the fittings alone so it was a surprise on the day when I walked down the aisle.

Everything about the day was personal. It all kicked off with our Save the Date video which we sent out 14 months before the big day.  This was Gethin’s idea.  It did take a lot of effort, but everyone loved it and we were really pleased with what we’ve produced.  Gethin pretty much drew everything, apart from the sheep, birds, cat and sun which I drew.  Once we had started our wedding preparations like that we had to maintain that level for the day.

We made our Wedding invite from scratch, following the same style as the Save the Date, with everything drawn by Gethin. We (with assistance from family) made all of the venue decoration from scratch, including the 130 metres of bunting (using ribbon sourced and imported from China) and the signs for the games.  A lot of the wedding games were loaned to us by Gethin’s dad’s school

Once we’d decided to have our wedding tables set up as teams to compete in our Wedding Games we decided team names and then designed our team logos.  Given we were doing competitive wedding games, we themed our team nams around our favourite sports people which also led to the idea of buying celebrity masks matching our chosen sports people.  We designed scoring cards for the guests to carry round on the day so they could record their scores as they played the Wedding Games.

2013-07-04_01982013-07-04_0199In the evening, we had the wedding rave DJ’ed by Gethin and his best men.  This was really personal as we chose the music we really enjoy (basically dance music from 90s and 00s).  The Wedding Rave was a massive hit, with our guests who loved the selection of glow wear we supplied, including glow sticks, glow bracelets, glow glasses and glow swords.

Our favours for the guests were sweets in little themed jam jars.  Every table / team had a different coloured sweet to align with their team logo and team colour.  The jars had personalised labels that Gethin had drawn and each had the team logo on it.

It’s really really hard for us to pick the most memorable part of the day.  We have so many favourite elements of our day. We both remember getting to the reception venue and seeing the wedding cakes for the first time.  We couldn’t believe how incredible they were – so inventive and professional looking.  More than 20 cakes were brought along and it was clear everyone had put in huge amounts of effort.  Everyone was discussing the ‘Burger and Chips’ cake all afternoon.

We both remember the launch of the wedding games when the first wellies were thrown.  We gathered everyone in the Welly Wanging zone and Gethin and I threw the first wellies.  There had been a big build up to this part of the day and a lot of excitement across all our guests.  I was just pleased to not have a mis-throw with everyone watching!

Our Wedding Finale race to decide our Wedding Games Champions is also a highlight.  The top 3 teams took part in a relay race (based upon a triathlon theme – to link back to Gethin’s sport).  We’d had space hopper races at our joint 21st birthday party in 2001so thought it would be good for them to make a come-back.  The finale was hilarious and has provided some brilliant photos. The Wedding Rave was a real highlight for us – the dance floor was packed through-out and the glow wear went down a storm.  It was very disappointing when we had to finish at midnight.

Our first dance was, ‘You’re in my system’ by Nu:tone.  This is a drum and bass track so a rather unusual choice.  We wanted something different and really like the lyrics and Gethin loves drum and bass.  As you might expect from us, we had some dance lessons and performed a routine for our first dance.

We had a mini moon straight after the wedding in Devon.  We saved our full moon (as we have called it) until very recently once our race season had ended and went to Mauritius.

Decide what is important to you and try to work together as a team to deliver it.  We absolutely worked on our wedding together through-out and ended up with a day which was everything we wanted it to be.
