{Monday Muse} Do I need a colour theme?

Happy, Monday, one & all! We’ve had a whole weekend of wedding wonders, with the last of our Essex Vintage Wedding Fairs at the Essex Indoor Vintage Festival! It was lovely to meet lots of brides & grooms looking for inspiration for their big day and some familiar faces who met some of our fab suppliers at previous events!

Today, I wanted to discuss something often talked about when in the initial stages of planning a wedding – a colour theme. Some brides have a very definite colour scheme they want to run through their wedding day, tying together all the little touches and ensuring everything coordinates.

Every year, wedding magazines and blogs rush to predict the hottest colours for the following year – with navy & teal standing out amongst the blush pastels tipped to be favourite for 2014. Yet, apparently, wedding themes are no way near as popular as they used to be – with themes replacing colour trends.

Colour trends

Others (like me!) stumble across one accidentally while choosing items like the bridesmaid dresses or the groom’s suit. Navy blue ended up being a predominant colour in our wedding, but we also opted for a colourful cacophony in other aspects such as the bouquet and the tableware. So, does it matter?

Long gone are the days of having wedding receptions looking like corporate Christmas dos. For me, organza sashes really have had their day, and a floral or brightly coloured chair cover or sash looks so much neater and unique than a piece of pastel fabric wrapped round it in a messy bow! Why not go bright & bring out those polkadots?!

Brides are definitely getting much more confident at standing out & being daring when it comes to colours. Pastels are surely a favourite with Spring & Summer weddings and I love a winter monochrome affair too! Tying your colour scheme in with the seasons seems a logical way to go, as your flowers can often set the tone and if you’re getting married in Summer, sunflowers can be the perfect way to inject a splash of colour to your big day.

My bouquet (427x640)

Don’t be afraid to mix it up! I adore this brightly coloured wedding of Tabitha & James, photographed by our very own Kerrie Mitchell. It perfectly illustrates how a whole rainbow of colours can be created without looking messy or confused. The attention to detail is just incredible and I love the addition of black and white to bring some order to the table layout too! Genius!

{Wedding Wednesday} Vintage Tandem Bicycles & Hog Roasts In The Countryside; Kath & James

Oh yes, our dear lovely readers – It’s WEDDING WEDNESDAY!

So, what have we got in store for this week? Well, plenty of inspiration and some rather amazing photographs both of the wedding AND the engagement shoot (I know, we do spoil you!) courtesy of Stefanie of Photography By Stefanie.  I’m sure that you will agree that the photography, is as always, wonderful. How adorable is the flower girl? Of course, we are loving the retro car!

Anyways, enough of me rambling on.  I now hand you over to the photographer behind these gorgeous photographs; Stefanie.

I actually met Kath on a friend’s hen do before she was even engaged and she was so lovely, we all had a fab weekend away in Brighton.  I knew that she had a partner called James but we didn’t really have a chance to get to know each other properly, so I was very touched when she got in contact with me nearly a year later to ask if I would do their wedding photography.

Prior to meeting James, his mother rang me and asked if I would do a portrait shoot for her of Kath and Gemma  (both partners of her 2 sons) and they were all so lovely and welcoming that I knew immediately how great they would be to work with. Following that, I went on to do a pre-wedding couple shoot with Kath and James.  We incorporated their wonderful vintage tandem bicycle, which worked really well and I have genuinely never met such a cute couple!

The best part of the day was, well, anything with Kath in it as she looks stunning – she is such a beautiful woman!  Having a wedding reception at a golf course is a little unusual, but it provided the background of a lovely rolling vista of uninterrupted countryside.  The weather was great and I loved going out onto the course with them to get some fun group and couple shots.

It was a very relaxing day with no pressure or stress; James & Kath had clearly thought through their celebrations from the big bits down to the little details. They used their tandem bicycle from the pre-wedding shoot with a basket on the front as a postbox for their guests to leave cards in which I thought was a brilliant idea! It was a real party atmosphere with a hog roast buffet and kids play area outside. Everyone partied the night away by all accounts!

I spoke with Kath and James at length about the kind of shots they’d like. They weren’t after too many group shots, just a few traditional ones. Mainly, they wanted the shots to tell the story of their day from a natural perspective. I offer quite stylised photography, shooting from unique angles and capturing the essence of a day. Kath exuded vintage elegance and so I tried to reflect this through my photography and from what I hear, they’re thrilled with the results!

Stef’s Top Tips When Hiring A Photographer…

I would suggest having a brainstorm with your partner before meeting with your supplier. This will help you to have a rough plan or idea in your head about the type of service you’re after. So many couple come to me without having thought about what they’d like out of the photography. This is completely fine of course as weddings to tend to develop organically as the day progresses, but if you’ve chatted about it first, it helps you both to understand what you’re looking for from your photographer and will help ensure you get the right results.

I‘m currently writing a 10 part blog giving advice regarding each big stage of organising a wedding so for more advice and tips, do keep an eye on my blog page: http://photographybystefanie.wordpress.com

I couldn’t resist leaving this photograph until the end – I love it! So carefree and oh, so in love…

Remember, Stefanie does travel and would be more than delighted to be your photographer! Please do get in touch with her to find out more.  We highly recommend.

{Wedding Wednesday} Dionne & Gary’s Essex Wedding with a hint of Cockney!

Happy, hump day! Well, we’re halfway through the week & the sun is shining here in Essex! We hope it’s a lovely day where you are & you’re ready for today’s beautiful real wedding! Captured by the lovely Bloomwood Photography, Dionne & Gary’s Essex countryside wedding has a hint of the Pearly King & Queen about it today!

D&G (12)

Over to bride, Dionne, to tell us all about it!

Gary proposed at home, on one knee, just before we left for our holiday. I knew he may have been thinking about doing it at some point that year but it was still a surprise! The wedding planning didn’t get going for four years as I sadly lost my mum and went off all things wedding. But we started it all again after our daughter was born.

D&G (3)

We got married at Lord’s Golf & Country Club with our reception at Battlesbridge marquee in Essex.

Our wedding was supposed to be small but we ended up with 65 guests. We had a tight budget so most of the things was done either by ourselves or with help from friends.

D&G (4)

We managed to source our suppliers either through recommendations or searching the internet and eBay.

We met Emma from Bloomwood Photography while having photos taken of our daughter. We immediately felt comfortable and eventually even the groom warmed up to having the photos taken! The engaged shoot helped us prepare for what to expect on the day & we’d definitely recommend Emma to others.

I found my wedding dress from just one visit to a bridal shop! It was the 3rd or 4th dress I tried on and knew it was the one straight away. It was a flattering shape and the colour was perfect. The shoes had to be comfortable but would also give me some height!

D&G (1)

D&G (16)

I helped Gary choose his suit as he always goes for black but I knew grey would go better with our colour scheme!

Making our wedding personal was the most important thing to us. We wanted every detail of our wedding to be the things we love. My husband is a cockney and was very close to his granddad. Therefore, we had lots of memories of him and his granddad walking in London markets, eating cockles, winkles & stopping for pie & mash with liquor. So, this HAD to be our food theme. Also, his granddad used to fix the London buses so we had one of those to transport the guests.

D&G (15)

D&G (14)

For favours, we decided to donate to Cancer Research with pin badges for every guest. This is a charity very close to our hearts.

There are lots of great memories! The best parts of the day for us was the best man’s video speech, the sun coming out for group photos, the food & the songs we chose for our first dance & walking out as husband and wife. We chose Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls.

For our honeymoon, we went to Tunisia as a family, with our two month old daughter.

My advice to brides would be don’t worry about planning too soon. Things might go wrong on the day but it doesn’t matter. You will still look back and remember what an amazing day it was.

We completely agree with what Dionne says! Enjoy every minute as it goes by in a flash! Huge congratulations to such a lovely couple!

Be sure to head over to Emma’s website here to see more of her fab work! www.bloomwoodphotography.co.uk

{Themed Tuesday} Dotty Over Polka-Dots…

Hello you lovely people!

I hope you are all well and are continuing to make wonderful wedding plans.  This past weekend was more than crazy busy. As a result, you may have noticed that Monday Muse didn’t make an appearance.  However, there was more than one reason for that. We have created, Themed Tuesday – every now and then, we want to share a sort of mood board, if you like, of different theme ideas for your wedding. Adoring Pinterest, I am frequently looking up different themes, so thought let’s get creative over here at AVWG and get theming.

Themed Tuesday, is all about the polka-dot. I love this pattern, I always have. You can incorporate this into pretty much every aspect of your wedding – even your dress! So without further ado, take a peek at our ‘mad about polka-dots’ collection…

What do you think of the polka-dot theme? Let us know what you think? We are DOTTY about it (haha! I had to, sorry…)
